Comedienne Joy is on a mission to spread laughter.
Since she started performing clean comedy 11 years ago, the busy wife and mom has seen her routine grow from performances at local churches to hosting the public affairs show The Alabama Way on ION TV 44, having a video food blog and being part of a weekly three-hour radio show.
“My background is in TV, so I’m doing what I love on camera, but off camera it is a lot of work, but I would not trade the opportunity,” she said. “I’ve been on and off radio since being in Birmingham, but the Joe Lockett Show has afforded me to be part of a radio show that I can call mine, and it is wonderful to be part of a team like ours. The balancing act gets to be hairy sometimes, but I said once my daughter went to college, I would pursue my dreams with all that’s within me, so that frees me up, and my husband understands what my goals are. We also have weekly breakfast dates so that gives us dedicated time to focus on us.”
Comedienne Joy, who has one daughter has been married four years, prides herself on doing clean comedy. “It is important to me because I am a Christian, and I want to represent God. Also I want to be (my daughter’s) role model, and I could not do that if I was cursing.”
Although Comedienne Joy became international last year when she took her act to Japan, she still believes there’s nothing like “the great people, food and scenery” Birmingham offers.
She encourages other mommas to not be afraid to pursue their dreams. “Do not get old and wonder woulda, coulda, shoulda… After losing my mom last year I realized how precious life is, so I now live life on purpose and live life with no regrets.”
