I’ve been a fan of the Barbershop movie franchise since the first movie premiered in 2002. I’m so excited for the third installment in the series. Ice Cube and Cedric the Entertainer are reunited in Barbershop: The Next Cut, which opens this weekend.
For those unfamiliar with the series, the comedy is set in a barbershop on the southside on Chicago. Calvin (played by Ice Cube) inherited the shop from his deceased father. In the beginning, he sees it as a burden, but over time, he understands it for the blessing it is not only to him and his family, but the community.
Barbershop: The Next Cut, which is directed by Malcolm D. Lee, sees major changes to Calvin’s Barbershop. In the last ten years, the shop has become co-ed. The ladies bring their own drama and challenge the guys at every turn. Despite the good times and camaraderie in the shop, the surrounding neighborhood has taken a turn for the worse, forcing Calvin and his crew to come together to not only save the shop but the neighborhood.
The movie has an all-star lineup, including Regina Hall (Think Like a Man), Oscar winner Common (Selma), Sean Patrick Thomas, rapper Eve, Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), Jaszmine Lewis, JB Smoove (The Millers) and recording artist Nicki Minaj. The screenplay is by Kenya Barris (Black-ish) and Tracy Oliver (The Neighbors).
