What is the book that changed your life?
Another Country by James Baldwin
Tell me about the book.
I first read Another Country as junior in high school, complete with having to do a book report. Baldwin dealt with all the racial tension I was seeing at that time in Birmingham, Alabama, but allowed me to know the color of my skin was not the determining factor in my life. Baldwin’s characters came off of the pages, sitting right next to me as I read. He took love, sex, race, blending them together to tell a story that still resonates today, 55 years later. This is a classic that would make an awesome movie.
Why did it impact you?
I am a romance junkie at heart. Another Country, though written in the midst of the Civil Rights era, is one of the best love stories I have read. My favorite quote from Another Country is “If you don’t forgive yourself, you’ll never be able to forgive everybody else.”
Is there anything you would like to add?
The world of books is amazing. With a plethora of authors, no matter the genre, one can travel around the world without ever leaving the comfort of home.
