I’m honored to speak with senior staff attorney Latasha L. McCrary about her new women’s devotional, which was recently released.
Tell me about your book.
EmpowerMoments for the Everyday Woman is a 31-day Christian-based devotional for women. The devotional is a collaborative project that is written by women residing throughout the United States. It shares interpersonal stories and testimonies of God’s amazing power at work in our everyday lives. The devotional addresses topics such as career struggles, homelessness, relationships, and trusting God. It was created to meet every woman where she is in her walk with Christ and to empower her to overcome challenges in her past, present, and future.
Why did you decide to write it?
First and foremost, I have a passion for writing and love to share God’s word. I’d been struggling to find time to start my next project when Kristen Harris, the founder of EmpowerMoments, asked me to co-author this book. I previously wrote weekly devotionals for the EmpowerMoments’ blog and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be part of this exciting endeavor.
What do you want readers to learn from the book?
God is amazing. There is no challenge that you are facing that God is not able and willing to handle. You are not alone. Someone else has been through your struggle and survived. Keep trusting God and watch Him deliver the victory.
This is your first book. What was the hardest part of the publishing process?
I’ve found that the hardest part of any project has been time. I love to write, so the ideas and words eventually come. The problem is that I often don’t have as much time as I would like to put pen to paper. My previous publications took a lot of time and research. The beauty of this book is that I had a ton of help and was therefore able to maneuver a lot of roadblocks with more ease.
You are also an attorney. How do you balance your day job with your publishing career?
Balance? Oh, that thing…Balance has become increasingly more challenging as my career advances. I am currently the mother of a 10-month old and teenager and live between two cities while working full-time. That is just the tip of the iceberg. So, for me, the key to balancing my family and dreams has been “don’t think about; just do it.” If I stopped to think about it, I would probably never accomplish anything. Instead, I set goals, pray, and trust God to work out the details.
What is the biggest lesson you want readers to learn from your life?
Simply stated: “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” My life has been filled with reasons why I should have given up. Yet, the grace of God has allowed me to accomplish more than I could have ever imagined. If there is anything that can be learned from my life it is that with God you can do anything.
Who is your favorite author and why?
I don’t have as much time to read for leisure as I would like. However, my favorite author is Mark Twain. The Adventures of Huckleberry of Finn made a lasting impression on my life. I love the way that Twain confronted timely political and racial issues despite the fact that they were unpopular.
What’s next for Latasha L. McCrary?
Honestly, I am open to whatever God has in store for me. In my career, I am busy trying a class action lawsuit regarding the violation of prisoners’ constitutional rights. That will keep me busy for some time. As it relates to writing, I hope to publish a legal article on the mass incarceration movement and its impact on criminal justice reform in Alabama.
