Clergy and accounts payable analyst Debrah Lynette Chavis found strength in the book that changed her life.
One of The books that impacted my life is A Tale of Three Kings by Gene Edwards (which I have read more than once).
The book is a study in brokenness. This best-selling tale is based on the biblical figures of David, Saul, and Absalom. For the many Christians who have experienced pain, loss, and heartache at the hands of other believers, this compelling story offers comfort, healing, and hope. What do you do when someone throws a spear at you?”
This book impacted me during a season of my life where I was wounded, hurt, and feeling attacked by authority (Spiritual Leadership) figures. I was feeling held back by leadership and my marriage had began to unravel at the seams. I also felt that the more I submitted to authority the more I was passed over and beat down.
As I read each page, of this book, it helped me to take my eyes off of people and to stop murmuring and complaining against the leadership.
My brokeness was creating fickle feelings that were taking over my faith. Yes, spears and darts were being thrown at me but it was my reactions and my focus that kept me frustrated, stressed, and depleted. This book showed me how broken I really was as a leader and to examine myself to see if, at different places in my journey, I have been an Absalom, Saul, and David.
The question in the book “What do you do when someone throws a spear at you?” You don’t throw any back and as I searched my heart I saw that I had thrown some back. A young David was not thrust into the lineage of royalty but into the school of brokenness. In all my woundedness and pain God wanted a Debrah with a broken and contrite heart so that I could be fruitful in His Kingdom. Whew that really convicted me. I thank God for that pruning and crushing season of my life and for the person who gave me this book. I have passed it on several times.
