If you love a good helping of greens, you don’t want to miss the 9th Annual Maw Maw’s Collard Green Cook-off and Wellness Expo happening this Saturday, October 21 from noon to 5 p.m.
The family-focused event will be hosted in the heart of West End on the grounds of Urban Ministry. It is a celebration of food, wellness, and community promoting the healthy living programs of Urban Ministry. Sample collard greens, shop vendors, visit wellness experts with live music, games for kids and more!
“The event is newly renamed in honor of Ernestine Washington, affectionately known as Maw Maw, who was a key community leader and Urban Ministry staple prior to her death in 2016. Maw Maw was at the heart of the Urban Ministry family and West End neighborhood. Her spirit lives on through the Collard Green Cook-off and Wellness Expo,” said Urban Ministry’s Development Director Angela Abdur-Rasheed. “It really is the best of what Birmingham has to offer in food, family-friendly fun, music and wellness. It truly has something for everyone with a goal to bring the community together, and sharing more about Urban Ministry’s healthy living programs.”
“You come for the food, but you stay for the fellowship,” said Urban Ministry Junior Staff Intern Denzel Stevenson.
According to Rashed, this is a free event, but donations are welcomed.
