Legal admin Carla (Rowser) Jervey found value in the book that changed her life.
“The book that changed my life was The Value in the Valley by Iyanla Vanzant.
“Although there were several Iyanla Vanzant books that carried me through a very trying time in my life, I would have to say that when the going was too tough and change was the only option, turning the pages of The Value in the Valley became my safe haven.
“This book did it for me—it was perfect timing. I was in my mid 20’s, the mother of two small children and in a failing marriage. Hopeless, lost, confused and desperate are just a few of the words that would best describe my state of mind at the time. Marriage counseling was never an option with my then spouse. I was the only one seeking help to save the marriage. However, when you know you need help with or without the support of your spouse, you must show up and take charge of your life. In exchange for marriage counseling, I chose to read books that I thought would inspire and encourage me to move beyond my dreaded situation. The Value in the Valley guided me to think better and eventually do better.
“The book was filled with so many examples of valleys, and it led me to see what I initially could not see nor understand. It made me aware of what I was willing and not willing to accept in my life. It made me a stronger person and to take the values from the valleys. Ms. Vanzant did not fail me. My desire was to pick up the pieces and put my life back on track. The Value in the Valley sure did that for me. It showed me life in a new light. It confirmed and encouraged me to make the necessary changes I needed to move on without guilt. It even brought out the writer in me. I went on to write my story, Diary of a Blackgurl, fully releasing the things that had always held me back. When you receive the message meant for you, there are some amazing things that will show up in your life. The Value in the Valley was my light during a dark time.”
